VPN Services Banned in Pakistan

On Sunday 10th of November 2024 several internet users in Pakistan reported experiencing “restricted access” to virtual private networks (VPNs), along with poor internet connectivity. After some hours the news spread like the wildfire.

Moreover, VPNs are commonly used worldwide to access content that may be unavailable or blocked in users’ home countries. In Pakistan, many use VPNs to reach X and other restricted websites. Especialy, in the recent years the use of VPN has increased since the government of Pakistan intalled the Firewall in its IT system.

In August, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) intensified efforts to limit VPN usage to prevent access to the already banned social media platform X.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated in September that the ban on X was due to national security concerns, not an attempt to restrict freedom of expression. He explained that “separatists and terrorists” were misusing the platform against Pakistan, which could not be tolerated.

Later that month, the PTA clarified that VPNs were not being blocked in the country, dispelling rumors to the contrary.

However, many users on X reported on Sunday that their VPN access was being slowed down and restricted. The situation is still not clear due to the unavailability of authentic information.
